Γεννήθηκε στην Κερπινή. Είχε άλλα πέντε αδέλφια, τον Νικόλαο που απεβίωσε σε μικρή ηλικία και πήρε στη συνέχεια το όνομά του ο άλλος αδελφός του ,ο Νικόλαος Καραπατής, την Ελένη, τον Ανδρέα, τον Γιάννη και τη Μαρία. Ήταν άγαμος.
